INVESTIGATE

COLLECTIONS- HOW DO WE KEEP THEM SAFE? WHAT IS THE BEST TREATMENT FOR THESE ARTIFACTS?

How is a collection documented? What do we measure and how do we determine if an artifact needs preservation or treatment? Learn all these skills at the Collections Center which we maintain at the Chumash Indian Museum, next to their main building.

Archaeological investigations performed locally in Ventura County have revealed so much about the Early Spanish presence, as well as the earliest Native American lifeways in our region.

  • Maps and documents from the early 1900’s and late 1800’s show where the Land Grants were located

  • Drawings and oral histories of those who lived here in the early days are on file here and in other institutions in local Museums.

  • Writing a college paper and want to specialize in this area? We have library volumes available for use at our facility.

Here's just a small sampling of the types of collections that we help to preserve: from Olivas Adobe, from the regions around Pitas Point and from local Lang Ranch.
